The Rocks is one of Sydney’s most walkable neighbourhoods, with sandstone laneways, harbour views, and a mix of history and good food all within easy reach. Here’s how to make the most of it.
Begin at The Garden on Argyle Street. Open from 8am, it’s a courtyard designed by landscape designer Paul Bangay, set within the heritage Argyle Stores building. Enjoy coffee and pastries among greenery that changes with the seasons. It’s a calm way to start before the rest of the neighbourhood wakes up. It’s worth arriving early to have the space to yourself.
The Rocks is best explored on foot. Nurses Walk and Suez Canal are two of the area’s best-known laneways, narrow and cobblestoned, with the kind of atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere in Sydney. The Rocks Discovery Museum on Kendall Lane is free to enter and covers the area’s history from pre-European times to the present. It’s housed in a restored 1850s sandstone warehouse and takes about an hour.
The Museum of Contemporary Art on George Street is free to enter and one of the better ways to spend an hour in the city. It features permanent and rotating exhibitions across multiple floors, with a rooftop café that looks out over the Overseas Passenger Terminal and Harbour Bridge. It’s worth timing a visit before lunch while the crowds are still light.
Observatory Hill sits just above The Rocks and offers some of the best views of the Harbour Bridge in the city without the crowds of more obvious vantage points. The walk down through the reserve and along Hickson Road toward the wharf takes in the bridge up close. On weekends, The Rocks Markets run along George Street and Playfair Street — local makers, food stalls, and a good reason to slow down for an hour.
The Garden is the natural place to finish. Happy hour runs daily from 5 to 7pm, including Saturday and Sunday, with $7 classic cocktails, beers, wines, and house spirits. The courtyard catches the late afternoon light well. Order a Negroni, find a spot in the courtyard, and let the evening take its time.
